If you’ve used WhatsApp before, then you probably use it to send files to your coworker or classmates too and sometimes you will come across error such as File Format is Not Supported, and today we’ll be fixing WhatsApp file format is not supported.

There are a couple of fixes you can try on fixing WhatsApp file format is not supported, so we’ll be going through them one by one and you can try every one of them and see which one fixes your issue.

Why does this error appear?

WhatsApp inherently supports a wide range of file formats that their user can send, but sometimes, even with the supposedly supported file format, this error can still appear and ruin your day. Why does this happen?

Well, chances are it’s probably because the file that you’re trying to send has a very specific format compared to other file formats.

As we’ve said above, there are a couple of ways that you can try on fixing WhatsApp file format is not supported

Update your WhatsApp

The first way on fixing WhatsApp file format is not supported error is to of course update your WhatsApp application.

Because when the app gets updated, there will be chances that an unsupported file format that’s causing that error gets supported by WhatsApp itself.

If you want to find out more about what changed or gets added on each update, you can look at the changelogs of each update to find out whether that update has what you’re looking for or not.

Change the file format

If you’ve updated your WhatsApp and still get that error, the second way of fixing WhatsApp file format is not supported is to change your file format into a format that is supported.

This method is almost guaranteed to work under most circumstances but do keep in mind that it’s a bit tedious and it can potentially corrupt your file if you just change the extension willy-nilly.

But, if you want to take those chances, here are the steps to do it:

•  Open your smartphone’s file manager app.

•  Browse to the file that you want to change the extension or format.

•  Long tap the file that you want to change the extension of, then choose Rename

•  Change the format of said file to something that WhatsApp supports. For example, let’s use .zip as an extension

And that’s it. If you successfully changed the file extension, WhatsApp will be able to read it and then you can send it as an attachment by choosing the Document format.

Again, doing this is a bit tedious and can be harmful under certain circumstances. For example, if the file format was .jpg in the beginning, then the person at the other end of the conversation needs to rename the file format to what it originally was because otherwise, they might not be able to open them.

If the person on the other end already knows what to do, then you can just leave them be and everything would be good, but, if they don’t, make sure to let them know what the format originally was as well as the steps required for them to change it back.

It can be annoying at first, but fixing WhatsApp file format is not supported error is pretty easy. Just make sure that you know what you’re doing to prevent losing data by corrupting the file by changing the file extension.
